Pay Range

$153,450 - $236,316 Annually

$153,450 - $197,028 Annually for the TSL.3 level

$183,990 - $236,316 Annually for the TSL.4 level

Job Description



We have an opening for an Explosives Experiment Fielding Lead . You will lead and be responsible for a wide range of functions associated with the planning and execution of hydrodynamic experiments. You will provide oversight and technical leadership to execute explosive experiments safely and securely in support of the Weapon Physics & Design Program, Global Security, and other programs. You will lead a team to assist the Explosive Research Experiment Leads (Ramrods) in the diagnostic data collection and execution of explosively driven experiments. The experiments are primarily conducted within Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s (LLNL) Site 300 Firing Areas but also occur at off-site facilities such as Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS), and others. This position is in the Design Physics Division within the Strategic Deterrence Directorate. 

This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at a higher level. 

In this role, you will

  • Provide advanced technical leadership and oversight to lead and coordinate a multi-disciplinary team in the day-to-day activities of high-hazard explosive experiment operations, ensuring safe, secure, effective, and efficient operations.
  • Manage the activities and short-term schedule by appropriately allocating and assigning technical and support personnel and interfacing/coordinating with facility managers to ensure work scope is properly bound and operating within the safety envelope.
  • Conduct development, review, and verification of conduct-of-operations, work planning and control procedures, processes, documentation, and peer review for diagnostic support of fielding explosives experiments. Perform RI/Alt-RI duties for relevant work control documents for fielding and maintenance activities.
  • Notify and report to the Explosive Experiment Fielding Supervisor, Facility Manager, and other laboratory managers, for events that have environmental, safety, health, security, or quality significance, and assist in investigation and corrective actions for such events.
  • Collaborate with the Explosive Experiment Fielding Supervisor, Explosive Research Experiment Leads (Ramrods), Facilities Managers, and other subject-matter experts throughout the explosively driven experiment community within LLNL, DoD, and the Nuclear Weapons Complex.
  • Recognize, create, and implement plans to promote and foster a culture of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accountability.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

In Addition, at the TSL.4 Level

  • Participate in long-term strategic programs and budget planning.
  • Establish and maintain the firing operations' long-term schedule by effectively balancing personnel, resources, and facility availability in support of programmatic work.
  • Serve as a technical and/or operational peer reviewer for proposed experiments.
  • Identify, develop, and manage projects to improve fielding capabilities, coordinating with Facility Manager(s) and Weapons Infrastructure as needed.
  • Act as the Explosive Experiment Fielding Supervisor in their absence.

Qualifications

  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top-Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
  • Bachelor’s degree in STEM field, or an equivalent combination of education and previous related experience.
  • Significant expertise in one or more areas related to hydrodynamic experiment design, fielding, explosive operations, or equivalent high-hazard operations.
  • Advanced leadership, mentoring, written and verbal communication, and team-building skills to lead collaborative, multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Ability to approach and resolve difficult issues using mature judgement, creative problem-solving skills, inclusive decision-making techniques with a focus on implementing corrective actions and process improvements.
  • Advanced knowledge of identifying and analyzing hazards to develop and implement effective controls for unique experimental activities.

  • Highly advanced experience leading and managing explosive or equivalent high-hazard operations.
  • Expert experience handling multiple complex projects of varying priority with excellent attention to detail and within the constraints of program, safety, and security requirements.
  • Expert experience in identifying and analyzing hazards and developing and implementing effective controls for unique experimental activities.
  • Demonstrated highly advanced ability to analyze off-normal events and implement corrective actions and process improvements.
  • Highly advanced leadership, mentoring, and written and verbal communication skills to lead, mentor and collaborate within teams and represent Firing Operations to internal and external stakeholders.

Qualifications

We Desire

  • Knowledge of the Weapon Physics and Design Program’s experimental operations at sites across the NNSA complex.
  • Experience in project management, including creating budgets, schedules, and resource plans relevant to experimental or high-hazard operations in an R&D environment.
  • Expert knowledge of LLNL policies, procedures, and Environmental Safety and Health requirements, DOE regulations, or demonstrated ability to work in an equivalent highly regulated environment.
  • Experience as an LLNL Explosives Handler, Beryllium Worker, Rad Worker (II), and ability to obtain and maintain

  • Knowledge of processes and procedures for handling and storage of classified information and materials.
  • Knowledge of the Strategic Deterrence weapons program and/or explosive hydrodynamic experimentation.

Site 300

Site 300 is an experimental test site operated by LLNL. Situated on 7,000 acres in rural foothills approximately six miles southwest of downtown Tracy and 15 miles southeast of Livermore, Site 300 hosts approximately 200 employees with expertise in such fields as engineering, chemistry, biology, and environmental restoration. Employees assigned to work at Site 300 may be exposed to the organism that causes San Joaquin Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis ).
