Overall Objectives of Position
The Horticulture Technician I is responsible for the enhancement, maintenance, and repair of all Tribal Government grounds, premises, and other campus horticultural items to include Housing. The Horticultural Technician I will assist the Community Garden with technical aspects of fruit and vegetable farming. This job description is not an all-inclusive list of the duties and responsibilities of this position. The Horticulture Technician I is expected to perform all duties and responsibilities necessary to meet the goals and objectives of applicable programs. The Horticulture Technician I is expected to live the Purpose and Values of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians and will go beyond the call of duty.

Primary Responsibilities of the Horticultural Technician I
  • Maintains and installs new landscape beds by weed pulling when necessary, mulching, and litter control.
  • Assists Horticultural Technician II or appropriate applicator with mixing and spraying or spreading fertilizers and pesticides to lawn, annual and perennial flowers, shrubs, trees and vegetables using sprayers or spreaders.
  • Performs tree services to include pruning, staking, training, renovating, removing and stump grinding.
  • Plants seeds, bulbs, annual and perennial flowers, ground covers, grass, shrubs, trees. • Assists Horticultural Technician II or appropriate person installing, maintaining, and repairing irrigation systems, including winterizing the systems and starting up in the spring.
  • Assist Community Garden with planting and harvesting fruits and vegetables.
  • Scouts for potential pest problems in landscape and gardens.
  • Creates landscaping designs to determine the outlook of the area with plant material and hardscapes.
  • Installs gardens, ponds, decks, drainage systems, retaining walls, fences, and planters.
  • Assists appropriate staff with minor repair work on buildings, equipment, fixtures, grounds, and assists in carpentry projects as needed.
  • Maintains and repairs landscaping tools, equipment, and structures such as shade houses, hoop houses, and greenhouses.
  • Assists with Tribal Government special events and functions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by appropriate person.

Education/License/Certification and Experience Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required or must obtain GED within one hundred eighty (180) days from date of hire.
  • One (1) year of related employment experience in the horticulture field such as pest management, landscaping, farming, grounds upkeep, etc.
  • Landscape management certification from an Alabama Certified Landscape Professional (ACLP) accredited establishment required or must be obtained within one hundred eighty (180) days from date of hire.
  • Setting of Landscape Plants certification required or must be obtained within one hundred eighty (180) days from date of hire.
  • Any additional licenses or certifications are a plus.
Skills Required
  • Ability to operate tools and equipment required to perform assigned duties.
  • Ability to identify plants and pests.
  • Able to understand and carry out oral and or written instructions.
  • Ability to read and understand plans, material lists, guidelines and meet timelines.
  • Willing to work independently and be reliable.
  • Ability to work in a cross-cultural environment.
  • Represent the company in a professional manner around co-workers and guests.
  • Must be in good physical condition with the ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, and twist for an extended period of time as well as climb, lift, hold, and move objects weighing a minimum of fifty (50) pounds.
Additional Requirements
  • Ability to work odd and irregular hours, as needed.
  • Ability to travel and participate in required training, leadership development, and other events
  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license and insurable driving record according to Tribal insurance guidelines.
  • Ability to adequately and successfully perform all duties and responsibilities of this position.
